... Flash Flood Watch now in effect through Friday evening...

The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for

* Flash Flood Watch has been expanded in time and location.

* Through early Friday evening.

* Moderate to heavy rains will relax across the area tonight, but
will quickly redevelop Friday. Tropical system Cindy has already
dumped 2 to 4 inches of rain with locally higher amounts up to 6
inches. An additional 2 inches of rain or so is passable Friday
into Saturday.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

... Storm survey plan of the day for Friday June 23rd...

.Overview...

Bands of showers and a few thunderstorms, rotating around the
remnants of tropical system Cindy, produced flooding rainfall and a
few potential tornadoes. Storm total rainfall since Monday ranged
from 1 to 8 inches, with locally higher amounts. The heaviest rain
occurred south of a line from near Troy to near Tuscaloosa and
Birmingham. We have received several flooding reports the past few
days. Additionally, this rainfall has caused rises in area rivers and
a few locations will experience minor flooding.

Two damage locations were associated with rotating thunderstorms.
This damage may be associated with tornadoes.

Survey summary:

At this time, storm surveys are being planned for the following
counties Friday June 23rd:

Team one: primary targets:
Jefferson County (bessemer/fairfield)
Shelby County (rural west near Bibb co line)

Preliminary findings from Jefferson County...
significant structure damage occurred near the Western Hills mall in
Fairfield/Midfield. At least four people were injured in this area.
The damage at the intersection of Dr. Martin Luther King drive and
weibel Road was estimated around 120 mph, EF2. A complete assessment
with a complete path, timing, and final rating will be conducted on
Friday. The minimum rating will be EF2.

Additional public information statements will be issued periodically
through the day, as survey teams report back their findings.

Depression Cindy, produced at least one area of damage today, in the
Birmingham Metro area.

Survey summary:

A National Weather Service meteorologist will be on site at the
intersection of weibel drive and doctor Martin Luther King Blvd, in
the city of Fairfield, by 5pm this evening for media interviews. If
additional information is needed, please contact the forecast office
at 205-664-3010.

Damage surveys will be planned for tomorrow, Friday, June 23, weather
permitting. Locations will depend on any additional damage that
occurs tonight. Additional details will be released at a later time.
