Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 12:29 PM CDT on April 29, 2017

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on April 30, 2017

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through Sunday evening...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of central Arkansas, eastern Arkansas, north central
Arkansas, southeast Arkansas, southwest Arkansas, and western
Arkansas, including the following areas, in central Arkansas,
Conway, Faulkner, Garland, Grant, Lonoke, Perry, Pope,
prairie, Pulaski, Saline, white, and Yell. In eastern
Arkansas, Jackson, Monroe, and Woodruff. In north central
Arkansas, Baxter, Boone, Cleburne, Fulton, Independence,
Izard, Marion, Newton, Searcy, sharp, stone, and Van Buren. In
southeast Arkansas, Arkansas and Jefferson. In southwest
Arkansas, Clark, Dallas, Hot Spring, and Pike. In western
Arkansas, Johnson, Logan, Montgomery, Polk, and Scott.

* Through Sunday evening

* heavy rain has fallen over much of the northwest and north
central portions of Arkansas in the last 24 hours, with one to
three inch amounts common. Widespread showers and thunderstorms
are expected through Sunday. The storms are expected to form and
move over the same areas. This, combined with a high amount of
moisture in the atmosphere, will create a situation in which
flash flooding and river flooding will become likely.

Heavy rainfall is likely through Sunday, with additional
amounts of two to five inches expected over much of the northern
half of the state. It is possible that total rainfall amounts in
excess of six inches could occur in localized areas, and this
would primarily be in the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains.

Though not much rain has fallen over central and southern
Arkansas, storms tonight are expected to be efficient rainfall
producers, and heavy rainfall is expected in those locations as well.

* Evacuations of flood and flash flood prone areas may be
needed, and those interests along Arkansas rivers will need to
monitor this developing hazardous weather situation.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

If you are in the watch area, keep informed, and be ready for
quick action if flash flooding is observed or if a warning is
issued. Persons living in low lying areas along main-Stem rivers
should monitor the latest forecast and be ready to evacuate to
higher ground.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the Road
to unknown depths. Take a different Route to reach your
destination or wait until the water recedes. Remember, most flood
related deaths occur in automobiles and flooding is the leading
cause of weather related deaths.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.
