Areal Flood Warning

The National Weather Service in Topeka has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
Anderson County in east central Kansas...
Coffey County in east central Kansas...
southern Douglas County in east central Kansas...
Franklin County in east central Kansas...
Lyon County in east central Kansas...
Osage County in east central Kansas...

* until 445 PM CDT Sunday

* at 1040 am CDT... light to moderate rain is overspreading the area.
Another one quarter to one half inch of rain will be possible this
afternoon in the warned areas.

* Locations impacted include...
all of Anderson... Coffey... southern Douglas... Franklin... Lyon and
Osage counties. Any communities in the warned area should be alert
for flooded creeks and streams for the rest of the day. Some County
roads in the warned area may also see water flowing over the
roadway. Do not drive into flooded roads!

This includes the Kansas Turnpike between mile markers 117 and 164.

This includes Interstate 35 between mile markers 128 and 199.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause elevated levels on
small creeks and streams... and ponding of water on country roads and
farmland along the banks of creeks and streams.

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.

Do not underestimate the power of flood waters. Only a few inches of
rapidly flowing water can quickly carry away your vehicle.

the Neosho river near Neosho Rapids.
* Until Thursday morning.
* At 8:30 am Sunday the stage was 23.0 feet.
* Flood stage is 22.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 27.1 feet by
Monday morning. The river will fall below flood stage Wednesday
early afternoon.
* Impact... at 26.0 feet... water covers large areas over both banks.

the Neosho river near Emporia 3nw.
* Until late Monday night.
* At 7:00 am Sunday the stage was 18.8 feet.
* Flood stage is 19.0 feet.
* Moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... rise above flood stage by this morning and continue to
rise to near 22.5 feet by early Monday morning.The river will fall
below flood stage by Monday afternoon.

the marais des cygnes river above reading.
* Until Monday morning.
* At 8:45 am Sunday the stage was 23.2 feet.
* Flood stage is 19.0 feet.
* Moderate flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 23.5 feet by this
afternoon. The river will fall below flood stage tonight.
* Impact... at 23.0 feet... overlow on the right bank is in several
swift channels over Road y 5, 3 miles north of reading.

* At 8:30 am Sunday the stage was 20.0 feet.
* Flood stage is 20.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... rise above flood stage by this morning and continue to
rise to near 23.8 feet by Monday morning.The river will fall below
flood stage by late Wednesday morning.
* Impact... at 24.0 feet... Highway k 99 on the South Bank floods.

the Cottonwood River near Plymouth.
* Until late Tuesday night.
* At 8:00 am Sunday the stage was 33.0 feet.
* Flood stage is 32.0 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Forecast... the river will continue rising to near 33.8 feet by this
evening. The river will fall below flood stage Tuesday early
afternoon.
* Impact... at 34.0 feet... Road a becomes completely inundated near the
river gage site, south of Hwy 50.

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* portions of east central Kansas and northeast Kansas...
including the following areas... in east central Kansas...
Anderson... Coffey... Douglas... Franklin... Lyon... Osage and
Shawnee. In northeast Kansas... Jefferson.

* Through Monday morning

* periods of showers and isolated thunderstorms are forecast this
afternoon and tonight. Localized heavy rainfall remains
possible. Given wet ground conditions and elevated river levels
from recent rainfall... flash flooding and river flooding may
result.

* Several river flood warnings and an areal Flood Warning are in
effect over parts over parts of the watch area.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that flash flooding is possible but not
imminent in the watch area. Persons in the watch area are advised
to check preparedness requirements... keep informed... and be ready
for quick action if flooding threatens.
