... The meteorological Summer of 2017...

The meteorological Summer is the 3-month period of June through
August. So far the Summer of 2017 has featured below average
precipitation and near average temperatures.

Through August 17th, the average temperature this Summer at
Caribou of 64.2 degrees is 0.5 degree (f) above the 30-year
average. At Bangor, the average temperature this Summer of 66.5
degrees is 0.5 degree (f) below the 30-year average.

There have been 20 days this meteorological Summer with a high of
80f or warmer at Caribou, which is just one shy of the average
(through August 17th). At Bangor, there have been a total of 36
days with a high of 80f or warmer, which is just one above
average.

Unlike many recent wet Summers, so far this Summer has featured
below average precipitation. At Caribou, a total of 8.90" of rain
has been observed since June 1st, which is 8 tenths of an inch
(0.80") below average, and makes it the driest Summer since 2009.
At Bangor, a total of only 7.14" of rain has been observed, which
is 1.81" below average. Although quite dry, last Summer was a bit
drier with only 6.98" of rain observed from June 1st through
August 17th.

Overall, the severe weather season has been a slow one this year
with no major severe weather outbreaks. The most notable, two EF-1
tornadoes that were observed on August 5th. The first was just to
the northeast of Millinocket in Penobscot County, and the 2nd was
in Sherman in Aroostook County.
