Areal Flood Warning

Statement as of 7:03 PM EDT on October 23, 2017

Expires 1:00 AM EDT on October 24, 2017

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
northwestern Rutherford County in western North Carolina...
Transylvania County in western North Carolina...
Henderson County in western North Carolina...
southern Madison County in western North Carolina...
Buncombe County in western North Carolina...
Haywood County in western North Carolina...

* until 100 am EDT Tuesday

* at 656 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rainfall has ended
across the area. Storm-total rainfall accumulations of 4-7 inches
caused widespread rapid rises on area streams with numerous streams
exceeding their banks and causing minor flooding.

* Some locations that continue to experience flooding include...
Asheville, Hendersonville, Brevard, Waynesville, Marshall, Arden,
Biltmore Village, Rosman, Davidson, Penrose, Chimney Rock, and
Black Mountain.

* According to streamgauges across the warned area, several streams
are above minor flood stage, which means they are inundating low-
water crossings, farmland and other low-lying areas, and some
outbuildings. These streams include: Little River near Penrose,
Mud Creek and bat Fork creek near Hendersonville, rocky Broad
River near Chimney Rock, the Davidson River near Pisgah Forest,
Mills River near Fletcher, and the French Broad River from the
headwaters near Rosman to near the Swannanoa River confluence.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

In hilly and mountainous terrain, there are hundreds of low-water
crossings which can be dangerous in heavy rain. Low-water crossings
can be submerged by flood waters quickly and without warning. Never
attempt to travel across flooded crossings. Find an alternate Route.
It takes only a few inches of swiftly flowing water to carry vehicles
away. Turn around, don't drown.

Obey all barricades, even if water is not currently over the Road.
Barricades are in place for your protection and indicate areas where
flooding can occur rapidly and without warning.

When it is safe to do so, please report flood waters or landslides
flowing over roads or threatening property to the National Weather
Service by calling toll free, 1, 800, 2 6 7, 8 1 0 1, by posting on
our facebook Page, or via twitter using hashtag nwsgsp.
