Areal Flood Advisory, Flash Flood Watch

Statement as of 11:46 AM MDT on September 22, 2014

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued an

* Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
eastern Lincoln County in central New Mexico
western Chaves County in southeast New Mexico

* until 145 PM MDT

* at 1144 am MDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
areas of moderate to heavy rain continuing over much of eastern
Lincoln and Chaves counties... generally along and west of the Pecos
River valley to the east slopes of the northern Sacramento
Mountains. Hourly rainfall rates up to one half inch are
generally expected with isolated heavier amounts favoring areas
between Roswell and Picacho north to Arabela... .as well as along
U.S. Highway 285 between the Roswell area and Mesa rest stop. Even
moderate amounts of additional of rain on top of the saturated conditions
will result in rapid runoff with high flows continuing in
arroyos... draws... and small creeks and streams that feed toward
the Pecos River.

* Strong flows and high water levels are expected in arroyos... small
streams and over low water crossings. Rapid runoff can also be
expected immediately over and downstream from wildfire burn scars.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued an

* Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
northeastern Lincoln County in central New Mexico
western De Baca County in east central New Mexico
south central Guadalupe County in east central New Mexico
extreme north central Chaves County in southeast New Mexico

* until 115 PM MDT

* at 1119 am MDT National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
widespread moderate to heavy rain expanding northward from the
Pecos River valley westward toward U.S. Highway 54. The heaviest
rain has fallen in a corridor along and south of Yeso creek in
southwest De Baca County. Rainfall rates between one half and
one inch per hour are likely with isolated heavier amounts
expected. A general movement toward the north at 10 mph or less
has been indicated but redevelopment of moderate to heavy rain
over the same areas will lead to an enhanced flash flood threat.

* Strong flows and high water levels are expected in arroyos... small
streams and over low water crossings. Rapid runoff can also be
expected immediately over and downstream from wildfire burn scars.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of north and central New Mexico... including the
following areas... Central Highlands... Chaves County plains...
Curry County... De Baca County... eastern Lincoln County...
Guadalupe County... lower Rio Grande Valley... Quay County...
Roosevelt County... San Francisco River Valley... south Central
Highlands... south central mountains... southwest Chaves County...
Southwest Mountains and upper Tularosa Valley.

* Through this evening

* an upper level low pressure trough over the eastern Great Basin
early this morning will track through the central rockies later
today. As it advances eastward... moist low level southeast
through south winds and a continued tap of late season monsoon
moisture will persist. The combination of these features will
keep showers and thunderstorms active through this evening...
and therefore the potential of heavy rainfall over the watch
area.

* Locations which have received heavy rainfall recently will be
most at risk of flash flooding. Other vulnerable locations
include poor drainage areas... steep terrain and burn scars such
as the Little Bear and Whitewater Baldy. Keep a watchful eye on
small streams and arroyos... and avoid flooded low water
crossings.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.
