Air Quality Alert

Statement as of 12:56 PM PST on December 10, 2017

Expires 4:15 PM EST on December 11, 2017

... Air quality advisory from the Oregon department of environmental
quality for northern Harney County, the lower Treasure valley of
Oregon and the Baker Valley...

The Oregon department of environmental quality has issued an air
quality advisory for northern Harney County, the lower Treasure
valley of Oregon and the Baker Valley due to elevated
pollutant levels. This advisory will remain in effect until air
quality conditions have significantly improved.

Inversion conditions are expected over the area, with light winds
and limited mixing of the air. During these conditions, smoke can
be trapped at ground level and potentially build up in concentration
for the duration of the stagnant air pattern.

Deq asks people in the affected areas to refrain from outdoor
burning and to use alternatives to wood stoves if other heating
options are available and practical. Information on wood stoves,
and wood stove smoke, can be found at:
http://www.Oregon.Gov/deq/residential/pages/woodstoves-health.Aspx.
Be sure to check for any local burning restrictions or wood stove
advisories in each particular community before burning.

Exposure to ambient particulate matter pollution is one of the top
risk factors that contribute to premature death in the United
States, accounting for approximately 100,000 deaths annually.
Numerous scientific studies have linked smoke pollution to a variety
of problems including coughing, aggravated asthma, bronchitis, and
irregular heartbeat.

Health officials recommend that Young children, pregnant women,
asthma suffers, those with lung or heart conditions, and adults age
65 and older limit vigorous outdoor activity. Pollution levels tend
to be highest during morning and evening hours.
