Special Statement

Statement as of 8:41 PM PDT on May 22, 2013

Expires 6:00 PM EDT on May 23, 2013

... Late season snow expected to continue at times in the South
Washington and north and central Oregon Cascades into Friday...

An unseasonably cold late season weather system will continue to
produce snow at times in the South Washington and north and
central Oregon Cascades into Friday.

The low pressure system will continue to be centered near
southwest Washington and northwest Oregon... with rather solid
moisture wrapping around the low and across the region. Snow
levels will hover close to 3500 feet. This will produce snow at
times into Friday... at which time the low will begin moving east
and the snow will break up and be more showery and intermittent.

Amounts may exceed 6 inches through Friday morning close to the
6000 foot level and higher... such as at the ski resorts like
timberline. A couple of inches of snow accumulation is possible at
the passes across the Cascades especially at night and in the
early morning... but warmer Road surfaces will likely limit the
accumulation across the passes.

Nevertheless... in light of this big change in the weather from the
dry and very mild period earlier in may... use caution when
travelling and doing any outdoor activities in the Cascades for
the remainder of this week. In particular... hiking and mountain
climbing will be extremely dangerous due to this change to more
winter like weather.
